Roar (1981) - More Screenings Than Every This Weekend!

When Noel Marshall's sublimely ill-considered Roar was finally released, 11 years after the project began...well, it was never actually released in North America, it just played a few global markets and disappeared. So, without any sort of hesitation, we are pleased to announce that Roar will be in more theaters this coming week than it has ever been in the past 30 years!

ICYMI, on Saturday night we hosted an AMA with Marshall's son and Roar star John Marshall over on Reddit, which featured a number of interesting revelations including the number of accidental injuries that made it into the final film, the most dangerous injury sustained on set (it's not cinematographer Jan de Bont's scalping) and more, plus details on the home video release coming from Olive Films later this year.

In the meantime, here's where you can catch Roar fever this week. And you should – Ultron will be creeping around theaters for weeks to come, but when else are you going to have the chance to watch over 150 giant cats run unchecked around a film set, causing total, unpredictable chaos?

The Emerging Past (2011) - Premiere in NYC 5/1

 

In the tradition of Hitchcock ...comes a new psychological thriller from the producers of Lazarus: Apocalypse THE EMERGING PAST Director's Cut.

LOS ANGELES: Writer/Director and former Queens New York resident Thomas J. Churchill readies to unleash his film The Emerging Past. Churchill is very proud to finally unleash his true vision to all horror fans, “Call it a Director's Cut...call it a Recut...I call it pure horror, the way the film was meant to be. Horror fans should prepare for a movie along the lines of “The Exorcist” meets “The Shining.” 

Church Hill Productions/Apothecary Entertainment, the company behind the upcoming retro zombie film LAZARUS APOCALYPSE, will WORLD PREMIERE at The New York City International Film Festival May 1st at the prestigious Anthology Film Archives, 32 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003 / (212) 505-5181. The Emerging Past will include a brand new story arc, never before seen footage, and a new style that gives the film a more thrilling and compelling vibe. It’s darker, edgier, scarier than the original and most of all a true horror film. Insiders are stating “It looks like a Blumhouse studio film.” The film will also carry a haunting score by Jon Brummer (Lazarus Apocalypse) in the tradition of classic Hollywood films.

The soundtrack is sure to please music lovers with all new songs from recording artists "Sugar" Parks and The Massacre and Mike Pacheco of the MP Project (who will also be opening up for Quiet Riot on May 3 in New York). The soundtrack will be distributed by Apothecary Entertainment later this year.

A previous festival/preview version had a small release as a fan favorite at conventions and festivals. It won 6 awards as it played the circuit racking up two Best Pictures, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Song, and Best Trailer awards. But Churchill was never satisfied with that version. Taking a cue from George Lucas, Churchill insists “That version is now a collector’s item; never to be released again...ever.”

The star of the film, Krista Grotte, along with cast members Edward X Young, Mike Marino, Ray Capuana, Steve Dash, and writer/director Thomas J. Churchill will all attend the premiere. An event is also being planned for the West Coast before the Fall release of the film.

Synopsis: When you can't see the future you need to live for the past. Murder and mayhem surround Queens New York Tribune photographer, Pamela Garret (played by Krista Grotte, Lazarus Apocalypse, Hershel Gordon Lewis' The Uh-Oh Show, Brainjacked) after she is discovered taking a life altering picture of a sacrifice ritual. Her world suddenly becomes a jigsaw puzzle as she quickly needs to solve it and find somewhere safe to hide before her emerging past catches up with her. With no where to go, she turns to her coworker Dylan (played by Brooke McCarter, The Lost Boys, Trashin, The Uh-Oh Show) for help. As stress levels rise in her search for the truth her coworker spins the game into another level as he reveals just who he really is. As she soon realizes that the past is never where you left it...

The film was shot throughout Churchill's former Queens neighborhoods of Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth, Middle Village and Levittown, New York. His former parish Saint Matthias also has a featured role in this thriller.

Fans of Churchill can see him playing the very creepy "Beelzebub" in the upcoming Lazarus Apocalypse, and a Japanese mob boss in the upcoming Samurai Cop 2. Thbe Strain (TV) - Can You Trust Her?

He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

Leatherface (Film) - Could This Be Young Leatherface?

Bloody Disgusting brings us the following casting news:

British up-comer Sam Coleman (pictured below), repped by Emma Burnett at Mad Fish Management, has been cast as ‘Bud,’ one of the aforementioned three boys who escape from the home for delinquent youths and kidnaps a young nurse.

‘Bud’ is described to us as a big, slow boy with a violent streak. Could he become Leatherface?

The premise of the film, as mentioned in the above quote, is about three juvenile delinquents, one of whom grows up to be Leatherface. The IMDb description reads:

Prequel about teenage Leatherface who escapes from a mental hospital with three other inmates, kidnaps a young nurse and takes her on a road trip from hell. Along the way, they are pursued by an equally deranged lawman out for revenge.

No release date is mentioned for the film.

New York, NY - Wild Eye Releasing has announced the April 21st DVD release of film festival hit Jonah Lives. Hailed as "a fine cinematic debut" by Horrornews.net, Jonah Lives stars B-movie legend Brinke Stevens (Nightmare Sisters, Teenage Exorcist, Bad Girls from Mars) as a woman who thought she'd gotten away with murder, until some bored teens with a ouija board accidentally bring her buried secret back with a vengeance. The film was shot in Fall River, MA, the home of Lizzie Borden and site of the infamous Borden family murders that remain unsolved to this day.

The Dark Below (2015) - First Look

Dead Wait Productions announce the completion of principal photography for their new genre film The Dark Below. Award-winning genre director Douglas Schulze (Mimesis, Dark Fields) brings us a survival thriller that explores the fear of entrapment beneath a frozen lake.

The film stars screen veteran Veronica Cartwright (Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers) , Lauren Shafer (Mimesis), and David GB Brown; it boasts an authentic production value that took cast and crew into the depths of Michigan’s Great Lakes in the dead of winter.

The Invitation (2015) - Accepted By Drafthouse Films

This is huge: the very first film for which we have nabbed worldwide rights is Karyn Kusama's (Girlfight, Jennifer's Body) incredible SXSW thriller The Invitation. Appearing on multiple "Best of SXSW" lists, the film follows a man who attends a dinner party and becomes increasingly suspicious of his ex-wife and her new husband having a sinister ulterior motive for the gathering.

Called "unnerving" (Variety), "searing" (Movies.com) and "fantastic" (Film School Rejects) the film is a masterfully slow burning achievement from Kusama and her exemplary cast including Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus), Tammy Blanchard (Into the Woods), Michiel Huisman ("Game of Thrones") and John Carroll Lynch (Zodiac).

Roar (1981) - Release Announced

Anticipation for next week's release of Noel Marshall's catastrophically certifiable Roar has reached a fever pitch. The film, which stars Marshall opposite his then-wife Tippi Hedren and step-daughter Melanie Griffith, plus his sons John and Jerry, plus over 150 untrained giant cats, is the most dangerous movie ever made, with dozens of on-set injuries and hospitalizations.

VICE ran an insightful story this week on the troubled production of Roar over on The Creators Project, and Entertainment Weekly got a taste of the insanity involved in theirexclusive clip debut, which features Marshall vs. about a dozen agitated lions. You may or may not be surprised by how that turns out. 

Also, this month Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations will be screening Hitchcock's classic The Birds, starring Tippi Hedren, for which Victory members are entitled to two free tickets. Watch one Hedren-in-peril classic and get pumped for the other!
